Ona Zee was born on the 3rd of March 1954 in Los Angeles, California. Early on, she worked as a model with the Wilhelmina modeling agency, including appearances in Cosmopolitan. While most performers start after high school or college, at age 36, she began in adult movies, Ona Zee has made about 300 adult movies; for a few of those, she served as director, writer and producer.

She once described herself as "very bisexual". Late in her career, she expressed a fetish of performing with transsexuals, which she did in at least one film. She also created a line of videos that catered to bondage, discipline and the fetish crowd working in films centering on her dominating both men and women. She has appeared often with men under the age of 30, including performing oral sex with men that typically performed in gay/homosexual movies.

Late in her career, she appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show, along with porn actress Nina Hartley, to discuss the porn business. Both she and Hartley defended the industry, despite a very hostile mostly female audience. Both stood firm on their views, advocating free choice and freedom of speech. In 1990 she founded Ona Zee Productions with Frank Zee.

As of August 2007 she was selling real estate in Los Angeles for Coldwell Banker under the name Ona Dawes. She also manufactures and sells jewelry from her website. The entrepreneurial spirit will not die out with this dynamo at the helm.

Ona Zee is a member of the AVN Hall of Fame.
